American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny has earned his reputation as an artist with something to say. His relentless curiosity informs riveting character portrayals and masterfully crafted performances, reminding audiences of their shared humanity with characters on stage and screen.

Ryan believes the power of art lies in its relevance – that genuine connection can wake up a stagnant society to the possibilities of change. Ryan brings this clarity of vision to his directorial work, creating intimate films and stage productions that bring stunningly beautiful and innovative performances to audiences. Through his film work, he has commissioned artists to write, direct, and film original stories, leveraging his personal power to help elevate fresh voices and visions in the classical performing arts world.

Ryan’s commitment to transformative collaboration has led him to explore the potential of classical music in breaking down social barriers. He is a member of the President’s Leadership Council for Search for Common Ground, a global organization working to transform violent conflict and build healthy, safe, and just societies, and has shared his expertise with Houston Grand Opera’s community outreach programs, including their prison empathy workshops.

This season, McKinny stars as Joseph De Rocher in the 25th-anniversary production of Heggie’s Dead Man Walking at San Francisco Opera. He also brings his commanding bass-baritone to several role debuts, appearing as John Proctor in a new Francesca Zambello production of The Crucible at Washington National Opera; as both Michele and Gianni Schicchi in Houston Grand Opera’s first full presentation of Il trittico; and as Lieutenant Horstmayer in the Houston premiere of Puts’ Silent Night, also at HGO, in a new staging by James Robinson. Elsewhere, McKinny joins Omaha Symphony and Opera Omaha for the title role in Bluebeard’s Castle.
